F1 Hybrids
Breeding
the good
stuff
Ah, welcome, dear growers and connoisseurs! I’m Dr. Ignatius Malone aka Sticky Iggy, the fertility physician of the McGrim F1 family. Let me spill the beans about F1 hybrid cannabis breeding, and trust me, expect the good stuff.
Creating Homozygous
Parent Lines
Creating identical genes
To create a plant with identical genes (homozygosity), breeders typically use a process called inbreeding. Here’s how it works:
1. Self-Pollination
A plant is repeatedly self-pollinated over generations, fixing recessive traits in its genetics.
2. Selection
After each generation, plants that display the desired traits consistently are selected for further breeding.
3. Backcrossing
In some cases, a plant might be crossed with one of its parent plants (backcrossing) to reinforce specific traits.
F1 Hybrid example
Over time, this process reduces genetic variation, leading to homozygous plants with identical sets of genes.
In-depth info: Alleles
Alleles are different versions of a gene that influence traits. Homozygosity occurs when both alleles for a gene are identical, resulting in uniform traits. This can be achieved through repeated self-pollination, selecting plants that consistently show the desired traits, thereby “fixing” the genes in the plant line.
1. Roots
Picking plants with robust, healthy root systems that efficiently absorb nutrients and water, supporting vigorous growth.
2. Stem
Choosing plants with strong, thick stems to provide ample support for heavy buds and resist breaking.
3. Fan Leaves
Opting for plants with broad, healthy fan leaves that facilitate maximum photosynthesis, providing energy for growth.
4. Bracts and Calyx
Selecting plants with dense, resin-rich bracts and trichome-covered calyxes for high potency and strong cannabinoid production.
5. Pistils and Stigmas
Targeting plants with vibrant, well-developed pistils and stigmas that indicate optimal pollination and readiness for harvest.
6. Cola or Buds
Aiming for plants with large, tightly packed colas that maximize bud production and overall yield.
7. Trichome Density
Ensuring plants have dense trichome coverage, critical for producing high levels of cannabinoids and terpenes.
8. Cannabinoids & Terps
Selecting plants with trichomes rich in cannabinoids, particularly THC and/or CBD, for enhanced potency and desired effects and terpenes for their taste.
The Magic of

Why F1 Hybrids
Are Superior
A little
bit of
Sticky Iggy
magic
As the fertility physician of the McGrim family, I ensure that every F1 hybrid seed we produce is the result of meticulous breeding and careful selection. My role is to combine science with a little bit of that Sticky Iggy magic to create F1 hybrid cannabis seeds that not only meet but exceed expectations.
